About Hawaii Residency Programs
In July 1982, the University of Hawaii John A. Burns School of Medicine and six major Honolulu acute care facilities established the Hawaii Residency Programs, Inc. (HRP). HRP is a not-for-profit corporation which coordinates the administration of the university-directed residency training programs. HRP also acts as a liaison between the programs and the affiliated hospitals.

The John A. Burns School of Medicine and the hospitals cooperatively conduct the residency programs and post-residency fellowships. This approach has proven more economical and increases benefits to the residents by involving community physicians and other health professionals in the training experience.

The programs offer post-graduate training to more than 200 residents in the specialties of internal medicine, general surgery, family practice, psychiatry (general, geriatric, child and adolescent and addictions), obstetrics and gynecology, pediatrics, pathology and orthopaedic surgery. The Transitional Residency Program provides a single year of clinical experience in various disciplines such as medicine and surgery. The Accreditation Council of Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) has accredited all HRP programs.
