The University of Hawaii Geriatric Psychiatry Fellowship Program trains fellows to obtain proficiency in the six areas of Core Competencies outlined by the ACGME for practitioners in all areas of health care:
- Patient Care
- Medical Knowledge
- Practice-based Learning and Improvement
- Interpersonal and Communication Skills
- Systems-based Practice
The Program will focus on and develop in its fellows those special areas of expertise unique to the essential definition of a qualified geriatric psychiatrist. The program will achieve Core Competencies and special expertise in its fellows through a thorough didactic and experiential curriculum based on and adhering to the ACGME requirements for the geriatric psychiatry fellows.
The Program will exercise special care to train fellows in the appreciation of diversity amongst patients, families, and co-workers, and in the application of systems knowledge and multidisciplinary teamwork in mental health care. The program will monitor the progress of its fellows, employing increasingly reliable and valid evaluation procedures as they become available. The Program will assure quality maintenance and improvement through continuous monitoring of its educational outcomes.
