Jon Streltzer, M.D.

Jon Streltzer, M.D., is a professor of psychiatry at the University of Hawaii School of Medicine, where he has been a faculty member since 1975. He was training director of the psychiatric residency program from 1982-1996. A graduate of Yale University (B.A., philosophy) and the University of Colorado School of Medicine, he did a medicine internship at Queen’s Hospital, Honolulu, and his psychiatry residency at Yale University School of Medicine. He is certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology in general psychiatry, addiction psychiatry, and pain management. A consultation-liaison psychiatrist, he is a President-Elect of the International College of Psychosomatic Medicine. He was Treasurer of the World Association of Cultural Psychiatry from 2005-2007. He has been Chair of the Chronic Pain Task Force of the American Academy of Addiction Psychiatry and is currently CoChair of the Controversial Issues Committee. He is a member of the Pain Medicine Board Examination Committee of the American Board of Anesthesiologists, a representative of ABPN. He has been on the editorial board of the International Journal of Psychiatry in Medicine, and is a reviewer for several journals. He has published widely in areas of psychosomatic medicine, pain, and cultural psychiatry. He is a frequent presenter at national and international conferences. Working with Wen-Shing Tseng, M.D., he has authored/edited four books: Culture and Psychopathology (Brunner/Mazel, 1997), Culture and Psychotherapy (American Psychiatric Press, 2001), and Cultural Competence in Clinical Psychiatry (American Psychiatric Publishing Inc, 2004), and Cultural Competence in Health Care (Springer, scheduled for 2008). Working with Hoyle Leigh, M.D., he has authored the book, Handbook of Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry (Springer, 2007).
