On behalf of the faculty of UH-JABSOM DOP, thank you very much for your interest in our residency programs.
Here in Hawai'i, you will find superb opportunities to train in psychiatry in a physical and cultural environment unmatched anywhere else in the world.

I invite you to browse through our website to learn more about the strengths of our educational programs, which include:

  • Fully accredited residency training programs in general psychiatry, child and adolescent psychiatry, addiction psychiatry, and geriatric psychiatry; which allow residents to interface with and learn from faculty in the various psychiatric subspecialties.
  • A close collaboration with community hospitals and with the public sector in the State of Hawai'i, which provides the resident with superbly well-rounded training and opportunities to care for underserved communities in Hawaii and the Pacific Basin.
  • Opportunities to learn from nationally recognized faculty in specialized areas in psychiatry, ranging from neuroscience to cross-cultural psychiatry.
  • An excellent resident research program, which provides well-mentored exposure to the groundbreaking and internationally recognized research based at UH-JABSOM DOP.
  • One of only 10 combined pediatric/general psychiatric/child and adolescent psychiatric residency training programs in the country. The strong interface we have with the Department of Pediatrics provides excellent training opportunities for combined and categorical residents alike.
  • Our department is strongly committed to education and training in all regards. We are a closely knit 'ohana (family), striving to provide the best education and training for medical students, residents, and colleagues alike. We take great pride in the accomplishments of several of our residents, who have won prestigious national awards including:
    • The Laughlin Fellowship of the American College of Psychiatrists
    • The Ginsburg Fellowship of the Group for the Advancement of Psychiatry
We also take pride in having one of the highest recruitment rates, nationally, among our medical students, into psychiatry (around twice the national average). We credit our faculty and residents with creating the climate of collegiality and enthusiasm that allows great training and great patient care to happen in our program!
