Triple Board Program Leadership

The Triple Board Program is under the direction of three Co-Program Directors, Dr. Cathy Bell, Dr. Daniel Murai, and Dr. Courtenay Matsu. In addition, Dr. Anthony Guerrero, as Vice-Chair for Education and Training and Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Division Director in the Department of Psychiatry, plays a supporting administrative role in the program.

Dr. Murai was born and raised in Honolulu. He attended the University of Hawaii, receiving his medical degree from UCLA prior to completing a Pediatric residency at Tufts-New England Medical Center and fellowship at University of California, San Francisco. He was a Texan prior to returning to Hawaii.

Dr. Matsu received her MD degree from the University of Hawaii John A. Burns School of Medicine in 1997 after completing a BS in Biology at Boston University. She completed the Triple-Board Program at Brown University in 2002. Dr. Matsu joined the Department of Psychiatry in 2003 as Assistant Professor, Assistant Program Director, General Psychiatry Residency, Co-Program Director, Triple Board Combined Residency (Pediatrics, Adult Psychiatry and Child & Adolescent Psychiatry) and Co-Director of the Queen’s Emergency Department. Her academic interests include maternal mental health and infant development, improving access to mental health services in Hawaii as well as psychotherapy.

Dr. Cathy K. Bell is also Director of Medical Education & Attending Child & Adolescent Psychiatrist, Queen’s Family Treatment Center. Dr. Bell received her MD degree from the University of Hawaii John A. Burns School of Medicine in 1995 after completing a BS in Biology at Yale University. She completed the Triple-Board Program at the University of Hawai‘i in 2000. She is board-certified in Pediatrics, General Psychiatry and Child & Adolescent Psychiatry. Her academic interests include the mental health of Native Hawaiians, evidence-based child psychiatry, community-based systems of care, and psychiatric education. She completed a Medical Education fellowship in 2001 while serving as Clinical Director of Family Counseling Services at Waimanalo Health Center from 2000-2001. She joined the Department of Psychiatry on a full-time basis in 2002 as Clinical Director of Windward Oahu Family Guidance Center.

Dr. Guerrero received his MD degree from the University of Hawai‘i John A. Burns School of Medicine in 1994 after completing his BA in Biology at the University of Hawai‘i at Manoa. He completed the Triple-Board Program at the University of Hawai‘i in 1999. He is additionally board-certified in the specialty of Psychosomatic Medicine. Dr. Guerrero joined the Department of Psychiatry in 1999 as Clinical Director of the Leeward Family Guidance Center and child and adolescent psychiatrist at the Lana‘i Family Guidance Center. His academic interests include psychiatric education, Asian/Pacific Islander mental health, obsessive-compulsive disorder in Hawai‘i, and pediatric consultation-liaison psychiatry.
