the university of hawaii surgical residency program

Program Organization

The University of Hawaii Surgical Residency Program (the Program) is an approved five-year general surgery training program. The Program is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). The design of the Program provides accommodation for those planning on subspecialization after one or two years of general surgery. Acceptance at the first year level is made through the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP). All applicants must apply through Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS). Eleven positions are available at this level. Eight are preliminary (P-18) and three are categorical (C-19). NRMP identification numbers are 299618 and 299619 respectively. The Program operates in a community hospital system in which patients are admitted and treated by private surgical attending physicians. The program director is responsible for program management, and delegates educational and administrative responsibilities to the Director of Surgical Education (DSE) at each participating hospital.

The academic year begins and ends on the following dates
PGYI - PGY5: July 1 - June 30

Program Description

The Program utilizes a "team care" approach in each of the participating hospitals, a method by which private attendings admit their patients to the resident surgical service. Care is provided by the various levels of residents within each institution, as directed by the chief or senior resident under the supervision and responsibility of the attending surgeon. During the first two years, residents complete a series of required rotations which prepare them to either continue their training in general surgery or in a surgical subspecialty. Throughout their five years of training, residents will have increasing responsibility for surgical care, culminating in their chief year, when they will assume total responsibility for patient care and administration of a surgical team.
