University of Hawaii Transitional Year Residency Program

Transitional Residents may rotate among the following affiliated community hospitals and institutions during the training year:

Kaiser Foundation Hospital - the state's largest health maintenance organization. It is a teaching site for emergency medicine and various electives.

Kapi'olani Medical Center for Women and Children - a maternal and pediatric tertiary care facility. It is the major teaching site for ob/gyn and pediatrics.

Kuakini Medical Center - a general community hospital oriented toward the older Japanese population in Hawai'i. It is a major teaching site for internal medicine, general surgery, emergency medicine, and electives.

Queen's Medical Center - a large tertiary care institution. It is a major teaching site for internal medicine, general surgery, emergency medicine, and electives.

Straub Clinic & Hospital - a for-profit group practice hospital, involving private physicians in a variety of specialties. It is a teaching site for general surgery and electives.

VA Pacific Islands Health Care System - the primary VA medical facility in Honolulu. The VA outpatient clinic is the teaching site for the ambulatory care rotation.

The total bed capacity of these hospitals is about 1400 beds. Each institution has excellent library facilities and comfortable resident call rooms.
