The University of Hawaii Transitional Residency Program (UHTRP) provides a well-balanced preliminary clinical year in multiple clinical disciplines as preparation for a resident’s chosen categorical residency. The residents develop fundamental clinical skills through patient care experiences that occur in several community based institutions. Residents also participate in a variety of other educational activities. The major program sponsors of the Transitional Year (TY) are the University of Hawaii Internal Medicine Residency Program and the University of Hawaii Surgical Residency Program . TY residents rotate through both programs where they work closely with the programs’ residents and faculty. When rotating through both programs, the TY residents have the same responsibilities and performance expectations as the programs’ own residents.
